Students will be able to recognize and appreciate the social, historical and cultural context of the novel Of Mice and Men by learning about the plight of migrant farm workers in the 1930’s following the Great Depression. 

OBJECTIVE:

 

Students will be able to discuss the results of The American Dream survey they filled out in a prior class and how it ties into the main theme of our novel: Of Mice and Men.  Students will then be able to cite examples of descriptive language from Chapter One by annotating portions of the text and explaining how those descriptions create effective imagery for the reader.

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES:

 

- Students will Students will receive a worksheet asking them to define what “crucible” means.  They will be able to consult dictionaries and the Internet to research it.  Once they have determined the correct meaning, they will be asked a series of questions on how and why the author used the title to represent the events in the story.

- Having watched the film students will also be able to use their knowledge of Act 4 to complete the full plot diagram of the story.

- We will review answers to students’ Crucible figurative analysis projects and plot diagram.

- Finally, we will go over the highlights from act 4 and what happened to those in Salem after the play ended.
